Katherine Hustad

Biography

Professor Hustad is a Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor and the Oros-Bascom Professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders; she is also an Investigator at the Waisman Center, University of Wisconsin – Madison.  Her research focuses on assessment and treatment of pediatric motor speech disorders with an emphasis on speech intelligibility. Her work includes the development and validation of tools for measuring auditory perceptual features of speech, development of machine learning-based tools for characterizing of articulation in children, interventions for improving speech intelligibility in children with dysarthria, and the study of latent language learning through passive modalities for children with severe CP. Her laboratory is home to a 20-year longitudinal study on speech development in children with cerebral palsy. Her research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health for nearly 25 years.

Professor Hustad teaches graduate courses in grant writing, motor speech disorders, and evidence-based practice in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. She is deeply committed to training the next generation of clinicians and scholars. She works with students at all levels in her laboratory at the Waisman Center, including undergraduate, master’s, doctoral, and post doctoral trainees.
